Privacy Policy — Das Material

Last updated: July 13, 2026 · Effective: July 13, 2026

Das Material is an Android app that keeps the vehicles you own and reminds you before your papers expire. This policy is written in plain English and describes the app as it ships today — when it starts collecting something new, this page changes before that ships, not after. If anything is unclear, write to the grievance officer below.

Who we are (Data Fiduciary)

Das Material is in early validation with a small cohort. There is no separate company entity at the time of this version.

What we collect, and why

Everything below is data you type in. There are no trackers that follow you around, and the app does not read your contacts, location, call logs, photos, or other apps.

WhatWhy we need itRequired?
Email addressIt is your sign-in. Nothing else.Yes — you need an account to save a vehicle
Your nameSo the app can address you. A display name — whatever you want to be calledYes, at sign-up
Vehicle details — make, model, variant, colour, year, body typeTo show you your vehicle and identify it back to youNo — but the app is not much use without one
Insurance and PUC expiry datesTo remind you before they lapseNo. A vehicle with no dates is perfectly valid — you simply get no reminders for it
App usage events, device model, OS, app version, languageCaptured by our analytics provider (PostHog) so we can tell which parts of the app workAutomatic

We do not collect your phone number, address, registration/plate number, location, documents, or photos. We do not use advertising identifiers. We show no ads. We do not sell or rent your data — ever.

What analytics can and cannot see

This is the part most apps are vague about, so here it is precisely. PostHog receives:

PostHog does not receive:

When you delete your account, we delete your PostHog record and its events too.

Reminders never leave your phone

Reminders are local notifications, scheduled on your own device. Your expiry dates are not sent to any push-notification service to make a reminder happen — not to Google, not to us, not to anyone. Your phone holds the schedule and your phone fires the reminder.

The app asks for notification permission the first time you save a date— never on the splash screen. If you say no, the app keeps working; you just don't get nudged.

Who we share data with (Processors)

ProcessorWhat they do for usLocation
AppwriteHosts our database and authentication — your account and every vehicle you saveEuropean Union — Frankfurt
PostHog, Inc.Product analytics — an opaque id and what happened, as described aboveUnited States
Google Play ServicesDistributes the app + baseline crash reportingGoogle Cloud regions

That is the entire list. We do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers, and we send it to no AI provider.

Cross-border transfer

Your personal data is stored outside India, and the split is deliberate:

Neither provider offers an Indian region. Under the DPDP Act, transferring personal data outside India is permitted. Data is encrypted in transit.

Your vehicles are readable only by you

Access is enforced per record, on the server — not merely hidden in the app. No other user of Das Material can read your rows.

How long we keep your data

Deleting your account

In the app: You → Delete account. It asks you to confirm once, because it cannot be undone. It removes every vehicle, every date, your analytics record, and your account itself — including your email and name.

Full instructions, including what to do if you cannot get into the app, are on the Account & Data Deletion page.

Your rights under the DPDP Act 2023

You do not need to justify a deletion request, and we will not try to talk you out of one.

Children's data

Das Material is for users 18 years and older. We do not knowingly collect or process the personal data of anyone under 18 (DPDP §9). If you believe a child has registered, contact the grievance officer and we will delete the account immediately.

Security

Your data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest via our processors' defaults. We are honest about our scale: Das Material is an early-stage app with a small cohort and no dedicated security team. If you find a vulnerability, please email the grievance officer privately before disclosing publicly — we will respond within 48 hours.

Grievance Officer

Per DPDP §8(9), this is the person you contact for anything privacy-related — access, deletion, complaints, or questions:

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may register a complaint with the Data Protection Board of India.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect, we update this page and the "Last updated" date above before the change ships. Material changes are surfaced in the app, not buried here.
